Donald Trump indicted by Manhattan grand jury

Donald Trump has been indicted by a Manhattan grand jury, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter – the first time in American history that a current or former president has faced criminal charges.

The indictment has been filed under seal and will be announced in the coming days. The charges are not publicly known at this time, one source told CNN. Trump will likely be arraigned in court early next week, according to his defense attorney, Joe Tacopina.

The DA’s office has been investigating the former president in connection with his alleged role in a hush money payment scheme and cover-up involving adult film star Stormy Daniels that dates to the 2016 presidential election. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office will reach out to Trump’s attorneys to discuss his surrender to face an arraignment.

So... the first president to be impeached twice is also the first to face criminal charges.

Hopefully this is only the first of several indictments. It's a start. Couldn't happen to a better guy!

While TFG freaks out on social media, Former U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance reminds us that

"Every lawyer knows what to do when your client is charged: If the law is on your side, pound on the law. If the evidence is on your side, pound on the evidence. If neither the law nor the evidence is on your side, pound the table!"

The indictment comes amid several other legal inquiries into the ex-president.

Trump is also under criminal investigation by a special counsel in two high-stakes federal cases.
  • Attorney General Merrick Garland tapped veteran prosecutor Jack Smith to lead the Department of Justice's probe into Trump's efforts to interfere with the lawful transfer of power after the 2020 election.
  • Smith is also tasked with examining whether Trump illegally retained classified documents at Mar-a-Lago and obstructed the government's efforts to get them back.

In another case in New York, Attorney General Letitia James filed a civil lawsuit accusing Trump and his family of financial fraud.
  • James, who is seeking to permanently bar Trump and members of his family from running a business in New York, alleged the former president "falsely inflated his net worth by billions of dollars."
  • In January, a judge declined to throw out James' lawsuit against Trump, increasing the odds that the former president will face trial later this year.
  • Since it's a civil case, James can't file criminal charges against Trump, but he could still face heavy fines and restrictions if he loses at trial.
