Fiona Hill: "The president was trying to stage a coup"

In the expansive category of disgraceful things history will hold Trump accountable for that the GOP would not:

Pence says ‘history will hold Donald Trump accountable’ for Jan. 6th

In a speech Saturday night, former vice president Mike Pence delivered what amounted to his strongest rebuke of Donald Trump, criticizing the former president for his role in the lead-up to the Jan. 6 attack on the United States Capitol as well as attempts to rewrite the history of that day.

“President Trump was wrong,” Pence said. “I had no right to overturn the election. And his reckless words endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol that day. And I know that history will hold Donald Trump accountable . . . .

“The American people have a right to know what took place at the Capitol on January 6th,” he said. “But make no mistake about it, what happened that day was a disgrace, and it mocks decency to portray it in any other way.”
Was never a fan of the guy when alongside Trump but fair play to him here and his comments are spot on - far right wingnut denial notwithstanding.

The politician also stated that he would "never, ever" downplay the violence law enforcement faced at the U.S. Capitol. "For as long as I live I will never, ever diminish the injuries sustained, the lives lost, or the heroism of law enforcement on that tragic day," he said.

specifically riot or insurrection

He was Trump's VP, doofus. It doesn't occur to you that he had good reason to state what he did after being in the capitol that day?

Then again, your critical thinking skills are on par with your grammar and syntax so probably not...

Why do you call it an attempted coup instead of what it was - a demonstration that got out of hand and became a riot? Do you not understand that the average American thinks you're unhinged?

Why does Fiona Hill call it an attempted coup, you mean? Because it was. Tell, me, Jefferson, at any point in our history prior to Trump did 10 former Defense Secretaries feel the need to remind a sitting president that "there’s no role for the U.S. military in determining the outcome of a U.S. election?"

Also, do you really not understand that you've got it backward? You're in a minority, you don't represent the average American, and the average American thinks you're unhinged.

What made it an attempted coup instead of a riot?
It was a pre-planned (weeks in advance) and pre-organized invasion of the Capitol by members of the Oath Keepers, the Three Percenters, the Proud Boys, and an assorted collection of run-of-the-mill MAGA, QAnuts, and other tag-alongs. The purpose of the invasion was to force Mike Pence as well as leading Democrats to flee the Capitol, after which Trump's MAGA supporters in Congress would then refuse to certify and attempt to overturn the results of the election.

The plan was foiled when Mike Pence stood his ground, refused to leave the Capitol, and insisted on certifying the election.
