These Are Dangerous Times

Was it actually better during the "good old days" or does living in the "information age" make us all just that much more aware of the apparent "deficiencies" in American democracy - people aren't lined up at the borders requesting US citizenship because they view this nation as a failed "experiment!"

I contend that the more "deficiencies" that are brought to the public's attention, the more critical we become - with the many positives that we take for granted being pushed aside!

There is that. I think the decay we see in political discourse has a lot to do with the fact that some groups are now doing much better in terms of rights and income than they did 50 years ago, and some other groups are doing somewhat worse. It's natural to blame those people and seek a solution that can restore the way it was.

Within the ranks of the Democrats, we see an upsurge in women entering politics and an unparalleled diversity in Congress that is beginning to reflect the citizens they represent - the age of middle aged white males in suits monopolizing power is being openly challenged!

Several women have already declared that they will presidential candidate in 2020 - unless Trump can orchestrate an unparalleled reversal in fortunes for the ages, there is a good chance America will elect a female President, Vice President or both!

It was women, particularly black women who were instrumental in defeating Judge Roy Moore in the conservative Republican "bastion" of Alabama - signalling that with the right candidates Democrats can be competitive in almost any district!

There is zero percent chance of this happening in this next election cycle. Perhaps after Trump has served his 8 years. The democrats have gone crazy and now make Hitlery look moderate. There is no chance they win with "Republicans bad, more free stuff". It simply isn't inspiring.

It has now been proven that there was election meddling in the Roy Moore campaign. Of course, we won't hear about it since the liberal media only cares about election meddling when their party loses.

Apparently it only matters when a Republican wins, then we need investigations. Roy Moore lost so, nothing to see here.

Our military people have free healthcare, daycare, housing, food, education and a close community of people unlike anyone else. the U.S. Our military displays a successful socialist model that is often overlooked in political conversations on the right.
The military is not a self-funded socialist society.
You seem to want to label anything socialist when doing so furthers your argument, despite historical facts proving you are wrong.

Paul’s plan for a communist-like early Christian community
Paul was a capitalist, and Paul's plan for the early Christian community was also capitalist.

1 Corinthians 3:8
8 Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.

Jesus was also a capitalist.

Matthew 20:15
15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?

The early Christian community was also capitalist.

Acts 5:4
4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

perhaps this would be more productive if you supplied a definition of socialism
I think this task will turn out to be difficult.
Socialism means many different things to different people.
And there are thousands of different kinds of socialism.
In other words, "socialism" means whatever you want it to mean in whatever context you want to use it and you don't want to be nailed down to having to use an actual definition of socialism?

"state ownership of industry" - the military model fits this definition

"state ownership of capital" - the military model does not fit this definition

so, yes, some aspects of the military are socialist in nature

others aren't

similarly with roads, etc
Are you claiming that ancient Rome, ruled by Emperors and a Senate, is a prime example of socialism?

i'd make the same argument - some aspects of ancient rome were socialist in nature, by the definition given

that is very different from saying those aspects are examples of socialism

for that to be true, both parts of the definition have to apply

socialism

n
1. a political theory advocating state ownership of industry

2. an economic system based on state ownership of capital

It doesn't fit that "some" aspects of the military are socialist in nature.
There is no "state ownership of industry" for the military.
All the weapons, clothing, food, vehicles, and everything else used by the military are made by non-government capitalist corporations.

right, but they're owned by the military once they take delivery - they're not owned by the individual soldiers, for example

having said that, the individual soldier does own some parts of the gear he is required to have, items of clothing, etc

so i'll go no further than saying "some aspects" meet that single part of the definition

and resist those who want to overreach and say "thus, it is a socialist system"

Do we agree that we don't want or like socialism? Or is this about a definition and if we observe socialism anywhere in our country in an established way?
