Utah Parents Concerned After Assignment Asks Middle Schoolers to Make ISIS Propaganda Poster

SALEM, Utah — Parents are expressing concern after a teaching intern at a middle school in Utah asked students to create a propaganda poster for the barbaric Islamic group ISIS or another terror organization.

The intern gave the assignment to both of her World Civics classes at Salem Junior High School to “help students better understand the goals of terrorist groups and the methods they use to gain support.” The class had reportedly been studying terrorism in the Middle East and the use of propaganda, including during World War II. She noted to students that if they were uncomfortable with the activity, they could approach her to request an alternate assignment.

The front of the assignment listed “8 reasons young Muslims join ISIS.”

“In spite of the abundance of church buildings in Europe and in the United States, Muslims see moral standards deteriorating rapidly as they see Americans and Europeans accepting as normal same-sex marriages and people living together without being married,” it read in part.

But the concept of drawing an Islamic propaganda flag didn’t sit too well with some parents.

“We shouldn’t be talking about how ISIS recruits,” Annie Langston, whose daughter attends the class, told reporters. “We should be discussing the events of what they have caused to figure a way of how to deter that and how to help better the world.”

She said that she didn’t think the timing was right for the assignment considering last week’s massacre in Paris.

Another parent, who did not wish to be identified, told KUTV that he was concerned his son might end up on a terror watch list because he had to conduct online research about ISIS for the assignment.

Nebo School District Public Information Officer Lana Hiskey said that the school received several complaints.

“We’re grateful when parents have a concern, that they will call the school and let the principal know immediately,” Hiskey KUTV. “There were just over 60 students involved in this assignment and we’ve had four phone calls or communication with parents that had concerns.”

The intern has since apologized and the assignment, which had not been pre-approved by the school, has been withdrawn.

“The teacher was very apologetic,” Hiskey stated. “You know she’s young, she’s naive and her intent was different than how it played out. She has apologized profusely, and talked to the students the next day.”

“We don’t want students going on the internet and looking up terrorist things,” she also outlined. “This was a classroom project and it’s been withdrawn and she’s talked to the students and let them know that was not the intent.”

Whats wrong with her thinking? As to "any student who objects" - would they all know necessarily why they should object at that age?

Sounds like it was a sympathetic with islam intern to me, pushing their own propaganda. She should be fired.

Thoughts?

There are A LOT of better ways to demonstrate this sort of lesson. This is a very sensitive topic right now and should be shelved for awhile.

Here is another headliner about preaching the merits of islam in middle school:

California Parent Concerned After Teacher Has Students Sing Islamic-Themed ‘Fight Song’

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — A parent of a student at a middle school in California is expressing concern after a Seventh Grade teacher recently had the class sing about Islam.

The unnamed teacher at Springview Middle School in Huntington Beach changed the lyrics to the popular secular tune “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten and made the song into one about Muslims. She stated that she wanted to use a catchy song to teach the students about the Islamic religion.

“Like how a single faith/Can make a heart open/They might only have one god/but they can make an explosion,” she altered the lyrics to read. “This is their fight song/Spread Islam now song/Prove that they’re right song.”

But when parent Nichole Negron, whose son attends the school, found out that the class had been singing the song, she was concerned. She and her mother learned about the tune after the boy accidentally brought home a journal from class that had the lyrics pasted inside.

“The kids keep a journal in their class of what they’re learning. It’s like a study guide to help them study for their tests,” she explained to the Surf City Chronicles. “When I was looking through it, I came across a song that was rewritten from a popular song on the radio.”

“It’s very concerning because the lyrics come off to me like preaching the religion and basically telling my son and other children to spread Allah’s word, and they should follow,” she continued.

Negron said that she approached the teacher and an assistant principal about her concerns, but did not get anywhere.

Therefore, she and her mother Susan spoke before the Ocean County School Board on Tuesday to raise awareness about the matter.

“I believe that by singing this song, the children feel comfortable believing that maybe Allah is the only god, and maybe that they should start following him,” Negron told reporters. “And that I’m not OK with.”

She also found a stick figure drawing in the journal that raised concern as well, part of which had the words “Believe in Allah! There is no other god” in a bubble above one of the figures.

The district has now issued an apology over the situation and is looking further into the matter.

Too many of us--atheists and Christians alike--are biblically illiterate and know nothing about the Bible they claim to know so much about.

Teachers, if they are going to teach “religion” in classrooms, need to allow Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Mormons to learn what is EXACTLY IN the holy books they supposedly believe in.

I see nothing wrong with that if the teachers will show their students the objective truth that any other human being would recognize as being from holy writ whether Christian or whatever.
