What is bad is when the judge not only closes the Bible but also suspends the constitutional rights of defendants and the rule of law, as was done in the trials of Michael Flynn, Donald Trump, Roger Stone, and others hated by the democrats and their litigious pals in the judiciary.
Well there is no legitimate reason to require it. Swearing to tell the truth under penalty of perjury is possible and preferable.
You can swear an oath or make an affirmation, and leave off "so help me God," and a Bible may or may not be present, depending on where you're testifying. Doesn't even have to be a Bible, it can be another holy book.
Came across this photo today, after reading a couple articles about the implosion of the 'people's convoy' due to infighting and mutiny and what not, and was reminded of our recent back and forth.

I don't see the penalties man brings to the table as more punitive than the punishment God will bring.
If folks don't fear God, they will not fear other men.

It's like some on the far right feel some perpetual need to exaggerate or resort to hyperbole to demonize anyone to the left of them on the political spectrum.
