I have rethought my position on this case a bit. Taking the different sources in addition to the OP, here is what I have come up with.
1. Was the reason for the traffic stop silly? Sure, I don't think it was worth pulling the kid over for but if it is an infraction in the state, it is what it is.
2. It was clear from the beginning the driver was not going to go with the flow. How did he think it was going to go?
Officer: License, registration, and proof of insurance please.
Driver: No.
Officer: Okay, have a great night sir. *returns to car and drives away*
A personal aside, when I get pulled over. It's a yes sir, no sir type of exchange. If I screwed up, I will take my strikes and move on. I don't want to be here any longer than I need to be and I certainly do not want to confront the officer over something as reasonable (in my opinion) as asking for my information. If I want to fight the infraction itself, I believe there is a better place for it.
3. When he pulled the driver out of the car, this was a bit of a "uh oh" moment for me. It is a judgement call on the part of the officer and I believe he is needless escalating.
4. When the driver charged the officer after he gets up, all bets are off. If the driver managed to get the firearm from the officer during the scrap, it could be an entirely different type of obituary.
All in all, it was a tragedy. But, at the same time, I cannot help but to think a few, simple acts compliance and this would not even be close to newsworthy.
