Libertarianism and property rights

You tell me Nick. Is it lawful for a private property owner to do anything that he or she wants to do with his or her property?

Liberty ends when people are hurt. That has nothing to do with your suggestions. Most zoning laws and home owners rules are immoral. Private property and business are not the same thing.

Most, not all.

While I wait for Libertarians like drbrumley to show up and back up words like this that he said in another thread:

I need to emphasize that the private property rights that I'm talking about is with land and dwellings, NOT what Libertarian Murray Rothbard said parents should be able to do with their deformed baby.

help me understand this
drbrumley calling me a socialist is worthy of discussion?
do you really need help with this?
only drbrumley needs help with this

I know what the term "private property rights" means to Libertarians, but I just want to hear it from their own mouths.

Christian Liberty, drbrumley, WizardofOz, Lexington'96, TomO and any other Libertarians that I might have forgotten about, tell us what you can and can't do with your property (i.e. land and dwellings on it).

Let's talk about things like building and fire codes and eminent domain as well.

:AMR: Turnip truck? Nah, but I'm pretty sure you fell off one of these...

Now you know where the phrase "tastes like chicken" originated. :chuckle:

I like my diseased rodents extra crispy. :chuckle:

For those of you that don't know TomO, this is his way of warming up before he gets serious and gives us the Libertarian version of property rights.

You really seem to have this quaint idea that you have a 'following of readers' and that they must all be shouting 'hurrah' or some crap every time you post. I think you'll find the reality of the situation to be somewhat at odds with that...

Try not to turn this thread into yet another one of your drama queen shows Art. If you have anything to say about property rights and what a person should be able to do with their land/buildings that they own, please do add to the discussion.

Is it lawful to do anything I want with my property. Given the laws of the state and county within which I reside, the answer is no.

Tell us how building safety codes and health dept. codes are a bunch of hogwash and that if a building collapses on your family while you're eating what you thought was chicken but was really a diseased rodent, that the word will get out and that the business will eventually shut down due to bad publicity.

Did this scenario happen a lot in the past?

Not only in the past, but currently. Do your own research and you'll find stories where many people have died because the owner of a building failed to comply with building safety and health codes.

Well it sounds like the laws are working well then. Keep it up.

Most, not all.

Businesses are on private property. If you want to differentiate between what a residential homeowner should be able to do vs what a business owner should be able to do, we can do that.

Let's say that your next door neighbor whose house is 15 feet from yours put in his own electrical wiring. Aren't you glad that someone from your city came out and inspected the job so that you don't have to worry about your house catching fire if your neighbor did faulty electrical work?

The same goes with building codes. Would you feel better knowing that your neighbor's roof wasn't going to blow off during a windstorm and land on your house?

TomO

Get used to it.

I see your insight into my modus operandi is as deficient as your insight into everything else.

Then you're fine with your neighbor running a nightclub right next door to you?

Because you and I and pretty much everyone that isn't a Loonatarian believes in eminent domain (in this case so that the Keystone Pipeline can be constructed) according to drbrumley's post in another thread you're a socialist and a fascist.

The purpose of this thread is to expose Libertarians and their loony ideas when it comes to property rights.

Let me phrase it so that even those with one live brain cell can understand it Doper:

Health and safety codes were made because of people like you.

You don't read well, do you. I said that it is not lawful to do whatever one wants to do with their property.

The thread isn't about what is currently unlawful, it's about what those who believe in absolute property rights think they should be able to do with their property.

Feel free to share what you believe you should be able to do with your property even if it is currently unlawful (laws can change).

No. They were made because people like you who think your safety is somebody else's responsibility.

You want chicken and not rat? Raise chickens.

Remember that time when everyone's roofs were blowing off and killing their neighbors? Me neither.

You yourself said that many don't follow these laws anyway. Let me ask you, do you also think banning guns will stop criminals from using them? Did people stop smoking weed from the 70s-90s?

Go ahead and make your stupid laws. We break them with little or no consequence anyway.
