Just a light thread, I like The Voice much better since they began, they started the concept of focusing on the voice only. My Mom likes American Idol better; sentimental.

I also like the judges better on The Voice.

I much prefer the Voice. I never liked the humiliating and totally unsupported auditions on Idol, or the smug judges. And it was all too young and pop oriented.

The voice has fewer on-screen auditions and allows them to sing with the music for a real performance trial. It also gives the contestants multiple chances in most cases, before they are sent home. Win or lose the Voice contestants get several opportunities to perform on prime time TV with a full band. And the top 12 get many opportunities. The whole show is geared more toward showcasing the talent, and less on making them compete. I also really like that they are actually coached, throughout. By people who really know what they're talking about.

I agree completely, especially your first two sentences.

I enjoyed the early seasons of Idol though I was never a fan of the negative Simon approach or the long set ups of some of the more troubled contestants, complete with the badgering, following camera.

I've really enjoyed the latest group of judges and approach, though I think the changes came too late and the newer, fresher Voice was going to overtake Idol. You could sense that early on. I prefer the Urban/Lopez/Connick combo and show to the Voice as a talent finder, though it's hard not to like the mix of personalities on the Voice and I think Adam and Blake have the most entertaining banter/contrast of personality since Sonny and Cher.

So while I don't tend to remember Voice contestants, I do remember laughing and shaking head at whatever those two are up to and how they're mixing with whoever is in the middle chair.

It's true, the Idol winners seem more memorable.

The Voice is more entertaining. What I couldn't stand on either show were the contestants that made an agenda of their life. A good singer is a good singer no matter how 'different' your lifestyle is.

Not if you like them. Everyone has a diversion. I enjoy watching talented people making a case for a larger audience.
I really like the idea of these people having the courage and being given the opportunity to share their heart-felt "gifts" with us. I almost wish it weren't a contest, but I understand that people need the audience input to get better at what they're trying to do. I think that when members of a human community stand up and sing or dance or tell stories for their community it's probably the oldest and most immediate of all art forms. And it's a universal human group experience. To me, it's a fundamental way that we humans share the uniqueness of ourselves as individuals, with each other. And that's a great thing!

Turning it into a competition bothers me a bit. But I suppose that's also just part of our nature. (Though maybe not a better part.)

I think a lot of it is as TH said, the judges make it a lot more fun to watch.

Idol is still making the mistake of (if much more gently) highlighting people with no business making the attempt being passed through for us to watch fail spectacularly. The judges are nicer about it, but it's still exploitive in a mean spirited way.

The kids want a career. They're competing in any event. At least this way they get a serious assist at the end of it and those who don't win the direct leg up at least get to expose their ability before all sorts of agents and recording execs while building a national base.

If you removed the competition the best of them would never be able to find that exposure.

I agree, I just wonder sometimes how fair or accurate the viewer voting is

Well, the top tier mostly belongs there and while I won't say the winner usually represents the best in the competition, I'm not sure it matters. If you've had that much exposure and you're that good you might be lucky to exit without serious strings attached.

I'm sure that letting the fans vote increases viewership too.
