Blazing Saddles is at the top of the list.

There were many good ones named in the thread. Caddyshack, Tommy Boy, Airplane, etc.

At first blush...

Fierce Creatures
Saw that movie on opening day in Littleton, CO. The only thing funny about it was when the movie ended and my friend rolled an empty beer bottle down the floor in an almost empty theater. ting..ting..ting...roll...roll...roll...ting...ting...ting...

Only funny joke in the show. :plain:

It wasn't for everyone, but I thought it was better than A Fish Called Wanda, which I also enjoyed....eh, that's why we don't all drive the same car or eat the same food, I suppose.

Have you posted a list for consideration or are you just heckling from the cheap seats? :D

Wow.

The Big Lebowski. One of my favorite films. Also a funniest film to me.

School of Rock. Close.

I'm coming back to this thread.

O Brother, Where Art Thou?

I think Groundhog Day is very funny.

I think Fargo is one of the funniest films I know of. Certainly not limited to funny.

Office Space.

The Royal Tenenbaums.

Monty Python / Search for the Holy Grail.

Old School.

But the Coens make the funniest films to me. And also the best. Funniest *plus* Best.

Yeah, I must come check back in.

Edit:
-Dazed & Confused
-One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

And some films are hysterical (like Steve Martin's old act) when they arrive, but copying and the envelope stretching that was at the heart of them weaken their ability to stand up over time. Airplane was bizarrely different and funny for it, but I don't think it's nearly as much so today. Blazing Saddles lost a bit of its edge too. Young Frankenstein, I think, being a bit more of a classic comedy in structure, is now better than Saddles, though at the time I'd have said the opposite.

Oh Brother is one that should have made my list...Dr. Strangelove is another.

A LOT of people have mentioned O Brother. I saw that years ago and do not recall it being that funny. I'll have to watch it again.

It's not meant to be a knee slapping movie. A bit more subtle than that, though there are moments (a train sequence comes to mind and a picnic) where it is entirely funny in a more obvious manner.

Then there are romantic comedies, which aren't meant to be yuk fests, though they can have moments and a general charm...As Good As It Gets comes to mind...Sleepless in Seattle...While You Were Sleeping.

I gotta add I (heart) Huckabees.

I'd put Young Frankenstein in the top 10 if not 5 as well,
and I agree with TH's assertions - great movies get better with
time. Airplane and blazing saddles were fun, but they got old,
or I got old, probably both... :)

Lets not forget:

"Does your dog bite?"

"no"

"Ouch! I thought you said your dig did not bite?"

"That is not my dog."

We have had some pretty good movies listed so far, but there are a few glaring omissions. The Princes bride, Little Shop of Horrors and the movie that had me rolling like no other movie ever...
The Dream Team!
Christopher Lloyd, Stephen Furst (Flounder from Animal House), Michael Keaton, and the greatest comedic actor of our time, Peter Boyle!
If you haven't seen The Dream Team, stop what you are doing, and sign up for Netflix!

Foul Play

Seems Like Old Times

Fletch

and my personal favorite, Midnight Run

should be on the list too. I can't believe I forgot these.

Oh, and Support Your Local Sheriff

and The Americanization of Emily.
