doser asks a simple yes or no question:
Would you allow an elderly loved one to be cared for by an infected caregiver if they (the infected caregiver) was wearing a cloth mask?

eider's inexplicable response:

sorry, I don't speak retard

care to try again?

Considering that the argument is that the wearing of a cloth mask is an effective way to prevent the spread of Kung Flu germs from the wearer to another, would you allow an elderly loved one to be cared for by an infected caregiver if they (the infected caregiver) was wearing a cloth mask?

This is a ridiculous illogical way to try and prove that pro-mask people think they are useless. As I have explained, masks don't need to be 100% effective in order to reduce the spread of the virus. In the case of a KNOWN sick person, the remaining risk is too high to consider. In fact, public health authorities ask that infected people quarantine themselves- not that they wear masks.

I was going to say that "there is no need to be a complete jerk or idiot in order to support your political side". But apparently I'm wrong.

You can be a Republican without being a complete donkey! Indeed, you ought to be an elephant!

Duh! Don't you understand 'levels of risk' ?

Look......... if you don't believe in there being any value in masks, I can't help your daftness, but I wear a mask because I know it protects me from touching my face, and the Medical and Science advisers for my country not only promote this, but have pressed for legislation about it, which now exists.

Let's face it, by comparison you're just a bunch of laymen who think you're all more clever, I guess. Not!

As do I. Not only that but in shops, pubs etc there are also regular sanitizer stations where you can clean your hands. In and outside of shopping malls there are the same and supermarkets in my town are willing to provide masks if someone has forgotten theirs or the disposable ones have broke. (I've had a few where the elastic has snapped). The logic behind the reduction of risk in mask wearing is unassailable. The notion that they can somehow increase the chance of contracting infection is simply ludicrous.

Of course...... It makes so much sense to wear masks.

Asda and Tesco have kitchen roll and cleanser available for cleaning your trolley handle as well as hand cleansing stations and free masks where shoppers have none.

Doser's loaded question can be turned round. If a infected care assistant was with your elderly relative, would prefer that s/he wore a mask or not?

Ha ha! I'm sending on my mobile and it decided that the word 'doser' must be Disney. :)

I'm curious. Does anybody have a box of disposable masks at home with a warning that they don't provide protection rom Covid on them? I've got three boxes of these at home, different brands- and no such warning.

I have a box of Kimberly-Clark 47080 Tecnol Procedure Masks, but there's no Covid warning on the box, although I have no idea when they were manufactured, could've been prior to the pandemic.

And that is why people with your stubborn attitude are making this epidemic far worse than it needs to be.
This is absolutely wrong. When looking at the death rate graphs from any population, one cannot show where a mask mandate made any difference at all. So, no, it doesn't matter what attitude anyone has as long as they live their lives like they've lived with the flu. It doesn't make any difference at all if a population wears masks or not - stop falsely accusing people of murder.

One wonders about that photo.

I did an image search and couldn't find a photo that wasn't marked up, but did notice that almost all the images were posted on conspiracy-minded sites. You can't trust anymore that photos or videos aren't doctored and someone like me who isn't knowledgeable about image forensics has to depend on someone who is. Part of that lack of trust is not knowing if you can trust an image that's genuine - to be genuine.

It's possible the manufacturer (conveniently, there's no indication of who that manufacturer is on the top or side of the carton) added a disclaimer for legal protection. So maybe it's genuine, but the people who're posting the image are missing the point. The purpose of the mask is to protect others from the wearer. If everyone wore a mask we'd protect each other, but communitarianism is a difficult concept for many individualistic Americans.

The box isn't faked, but it has incorrect information. Initially it was thought that only an N95 mask would provide any protection for the wearer. It had been known for a long time that fabric masks would protect others from an infected individual wearing one. Hence, OR personnel wore masks, even if they weren't N95, because the patient was thereby protected.

The CDC recommends cloth face coverings be worn in public areas where social distancing is difficult to maintain.

But the CDC does note, “A cloth face covering may not protect the wearer, but it may keep the wearer from spreading the virus to others.” By wearing a cloth covering in public, the spread of the virus can be slowed by lessening the transmission to others.

Now, data seems to indicate that loop masks also provide some protection to the wearer as well as protecting those around him. The manufacturer either printed up the box before this was discovered, or simply didn't know about the research.

Effectiveness of Cloth Masks for Protection Against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2

Abrar A Chughtai, Holly Seale, C Raina Macintyre

Abstract
Cloth masks have been used in healthcare and community settings to protect the wearer from respiratory infections. The use of cloth masks during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic is under debate. The filtration effectiveness of cloth masks is generally lower than that of medical masks and respirators; however, cloth masks may provide some protection if well designed and used correctly. Multilayer cloth masks, designed to fit around the face and made of water-resistant fabric with a high number of threads and finer weave, may provide reasonable protection. Until a cloth mask design is proven to be equally effective as a medical or N95 mask, wearing cloth masks should not be mandated for healthcare workers. In community settings, however, cloth masks may be used to prevent community spread of infections by sick or asymptomatically infected persons, and the public should be educated about their correct use.

So it's like seat belts. They save lives, but they aren't 100% effective. How effective they are, depends on the construction and fit of the masks. So yes, even poorly-constructed and ill-fitting masks partially protect the wearer. Sometimes, it's hard to see why people don't get that.

Partially it's the political biases of people prevent them from thinking very clearly about the issue, and part of it is, most of those people aren't very smart.
