Brothers by Bernice Reubens

A story of two brothers conscripted into the Red Army at ages 10 & 11. Because of the tremendous suffering of the Jewish families during the Pogroms, survivors from that era rarely spoke of what became of their families and friends. Reubens' shares their stories in this gripping tale of survival.

when reading a historical novel
how do you know what is real
and
what is not?

I took a class on "novel writing" once. The woman conducting the class was a published author.
She said that while the story may be fiction still, the historical facts must be accurate. Apparently publishers have researchers who check for historical accuracy.

there are two issues here
the reader must know when they are reading the history part
and
the fact checker must be both honest and knowledgeable

I think I'd like some sort of 'ebooks on tape' thing, where I could download books and have my ipod read them to me. :)

Is there anything like that out there?

Yeah, there's a lot of it but it sounds slightly robotic - it doesn't bother me much but it does other people.

Animal Farm

I use that when I don't have time to read and I need to multitask.

It's best downloading audiobooks read by real people, you can usually find them for popular enough books.

Ha, I've got a challenge for you - try finding an audiobook Quran that isn't singing. (Recitation)

As for your ipod, the files will be pretty large, maybe 100mb/200mb unless you can find an app that reads ebooks ... you probably can.

That's why I prefer historical fiction as I don't try to get my historical facts from them. What I enjoy about the historical fiction is the time travel escapism. Familiarizing myself with what life was like in the past. Drama and suspense, romance, these parts of a story can be used skillfully by the writer to share a glimpse of the lives of our ancestors.

I enjoyed Bernard Cornwell's Agincourt.

Great seeing the original Band of Brothers from a different angle, and I learned a lot about medieval archery and archers.
They weren't Erroll Flynn lookalikes, but big bruisers who wielded polearms when the arrows ran out, all because of the muscle strength and mass required to pull a bowstring back to one's cheek.

While not a historical series in the traditional sense, George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire does successfully capture the tone of Britain's War of the Roses very well.

I'm reading Plato's Republic & Timaeus for my History of Ancient Philosophy Class. I am reading various text books for my Computer Architecture class and my research paper on Memory Hierarchies - focusing on cache and cache coherency.
