What would you recommend for a purchase of a new laptop. The best available right now ?

A Mac.

My failed Win10 Toshiba laptop had all the bells and whistles including turning it into touch screen tablet. It was overkill for me. I prefer what I have now, no touchscreen. The touchpad isn't trying to do everything. It even had separate buttons for left and right click. Lots cheaper and less to flake out on.

Yes, they certainly code in it as I have but that doesn't mean it ain't messy to work with and debug.

So do you love IE's replacement which apparently is Microsoft Edge?
I didn't question leaving behind IE as much as I was suggesting that Edge was putting lipstick on a pig (i.e. IE). Edge certainly walks and talks like that duck. I see you can even link from Edge to IE. Expect much is shared under the covers.

I work in computers as developer/designer and perhaps load on software that wouldn't be typical for most. Maybe that could make me more subject to problems. I am certainly staying clear of loading up this new Win10 laptop with what I did to the failed new laptop I bought only 4 months ago (which is Ubuntu bound. Might even tackle that myself in case this new, new win10 goes belly up). It's a lollipop.

I do like Edge, but I liked IE. I never really saw the big deal with browsers, they show you web pages, they all do, who cares. IE always worked fine for me. But there seemed to be a lot of hate for it in public. From what I heard they built Edge from the ground up, so whatever there was to hate in IE might not be in Edge.

I've upgraded a 3 home PC's, and 3 work PC's to windows 10. No problems, no crashing, like it better than 8 (of course) and 7.

Laptops themselves are fine.
This was about Windows 10. It runs on laptops and desktops.
If you don't need the portability and convenience of a laptop then by all means buy a desktop. They usually are cheaper too.

Typically the video card overheating with graphic intensive games. Two laptops I had wouldn't work without a cooling pad for more than 10ish minutes. And I could never use them, even just internet browsing, sitting on a pillow or something because it would cover the bottom vents.

I haven't had a laptop for a while now. I have a home built desktop and a surface tablet. My desktop has a GTX980 for video and it runs really cool. So maybe newer laptops run cooler now too, if video cards generally do.

Probably. But I think this is an old issue. I have left some of mine on for days/weeks at a time and no problem. I am conscious of the bottom and always put it on something to allow for air circulation.

One issue with laptops and especially tablets is it is difficult or impossible to do hardware upgrades. Desktops can be upgraded easily.

But we do live in a throw-away society.

You asked AMR this question but if you don't mind answering, I'd say that it really does depend a lot on what you intend to do with it but since we're talking Windows and presuming you like Windows and want to take full advantage of what the Windows platform can do, then you really cannot go wrong with sticking with Microsoft and getting the Surface Book along with a Windows phone. The two together are unbeatable. Apple has a big market share advantage on the phone side of things and so chances are you already have an iPhone and so switching may be more than you're willing to do (it is for me) but if I had it to do all over again, I'd have a Samsung Galaxy S phone with Windows and a Microsoft Surface Book.

That is what I am using. I have Win 8.1 but I do not like it.

Several reasons, not the least of which is that desktop computers get moved around and/or dropped way less often than laptops do. That and everything in a laptop is so miniaturized with such super tight tolerances that the components are simply more fragile than their larger desktop counterparts. Also, being smaller, heat build up is a bigger issue with laptops. My desktop has three fans in it already and has places were I can install two more! And as with any electronics, the cooler they run, the longer they last.

One of the reasons not to buy the more expensive models. Then, I do not use it for more than I am using it here.

What about claims by many that Windows 10 is the worst assault on privacy from any operating system ever? Microsoft claims that the data collection is for improving the operating system - system telemetry - and that it contains no personal information. Others write that Windows sends copies of photos, documents, and other information you open to the big Microsoft in the sky.

Privacy is a big question that I don't have all the answers for. Windows 10 is definitely intended to make money for Microsoft, and the question is how many different ways can they make money? Targeted advertising is one way, and that must involve sharing information with other companies.

Both have high resolution screens, as does my Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro. Once you start looking at the web and text using these 4K level screens, the old 1920 x 1080 resolution seems like stone carvings.

The only issue with high resolution screens is that not a few applications have caught up. So you end up with very tiny menu items, icons, and so on that even when setting screen magnification to 250% will not solve.
